Ranked teams are handled exactly like solo players until Challenger, in which there are only 50 spots available. However, Master and GrandMaster provide a more robust place for aspiring pro teams to practice. Riot's continuous tweaks to the pro scene have led to the constant improvement of the game, and the Master and newly added GrandMaster Tier are no exception. With pro shakeups and retirements dominating the news, fans may start looking to Master or GrandMaster to find their next favorite pro player.
LoL's Ranking Distribution. League of Legend seasons take place once a year, usually from January in a given year to the following November or December. Before each season begins, League of Legends releases the ranking distribution of the different tiers.
The updated distribution for solo play is:. Iron: 7. Platinum: 7. Diamond: 2. This distribution tends to remain close to the same year after year, and most players will find themselves with a Bronze, Silver, or Gold rank. Ranked wins and losses earn or lose a certain amount of League Points or LP. The amount is determined based on the difficulty of opponents and the rankings of teammates, among other factors. Once a player has earned LP in their division, they immediately enter a three-game Promotion Series—two victories will allow them to move up one division.
Teams are handled much the same way, relying on LP to advance through divisions and tiers. Placement for teams is handled separately from individual rankings. Progression through tiers is slightly different, with players needing to win three games, or best of five, to enter a new tier. If they win the series, they enter the new tier, and if they lose the series, their LP drops back down to zero.
While this system is simple, the ladder climb can be grueling and harsh. If a player's LP drops to zero in a division, they will be demoted if they continue losing games. Demotions can be discouraging and lead to players feeling stuck in a certain division. Once a player has earned a place in the Platinum tier, they can lose LP by becoming inactive. Instead of shaving off one whole minute from a race, you are looking to shave off just microseconds -- the difference between medaling and not.
Fun fact: just places per server are reserved in the Challenger tier. Even some of the best LoL players of all time might not be able to keep up with that. Breaking into this is essentially reserved for people who play League of Legends for a living or are affiliated with the eSports aspect in some way.
The current system still operates on a hidden MMR match making rating assigned to each individual player. But the system also uses League Points , promotional segments , and point decay to keep players coming back to ranked play.
Every player earns LP league points when they win a ranked match. In contrast, they lose LP when they lose matches. If you have a higher MMR , you will earn more points per every win while losing fewer points for every loss. This does seem heavily weighted in favor of already successful players, but what can you do? Certain tiers require players to regularly engage in ranked matches to maintain their position. After that number reaches zero, you lose LP instead.
Falling to less than zero LP means sliding down to the next lowest division. It is not known just how many games one must lose before getting demoted. However, if you go below zero LP, you will definitely get moved to the next tier down. Getting to your promotion series in ranked play is often the easiest part of the process. Successfully completing your Promotion Series can be quite the headache. But there are a few other things to keep in mind:. Each season brings with it new rewards for players who reach certain tiers.
As mentioned earlier, Gold is where players can begin to enjoy the full benefits of ranked rewards. Examples of reward types include:. Moreover, unlocking specific tiers allows players access to certain merchandise , as well, such as hoodies and t-shirts. This is why you will often be playing against enemies with a similar rank as your team, even in normals. The game remains balanced this way, and you will not end up seeing a Diamond player in a game filled with Bronzies, because well, that is just unfair.
MMR is used to make sure everyone has a fair game. League of Legends adds up the teams MMR and tries matching against another five players who have the same total. This way, the match remains balanced even if the ranks are different. You can have 1 Challenger and 4 Diamonds go against an all Grandmaster team because even though it does not look fair, the total MMR is equal and shows that the balancing is equal.
Players can be placed in Iron, Bronze, Silver, and Gold ranks. Ranks lower than master each have four divisions, while higher ranks are single-tier ranks reserved for only the very best players and solely depend on LP. These points are earned through wins and taken away for losses. Players need to earn LP to get an opportunity to climb a division. Once LP is earned, they need to win most of the matches in a promotional series to reach the next level. On rare occasions, players will skip a division, but this highly depends on their MMR.
Once a few matches are lost at 0 LP, players will be demoted. All of these metrics are taken in mind to calculate if a player competes with players of an appropriate skill level. If they do better than their division on average and win games against teams with higher MMR, they will gain more LP as the system will push them towards a higher rank, one that it thinks the player more appropriately belongs in. To simplify, if you are gaining LP per win, League of Legends thinks you are in a lower elo than they expect you to be in and are trying to push you to reach your deserved elo faster.
There is also a high chance of skipping divisions if you gain this much LP per match. If you are gaining LP per win, then League of Legends thinks that this is the elo you belong to and have to work hard to move on to the next rank. If you gain LP per win, then League of Legends thinks that you are too ahead of your deserved rank and is trying to slow down your progress so that you can remain in your own skill level and have fun playing.
